hullabaloo // yellowcake

What are YOU doing this Saturday??

Valerie Mayen of Yellowcake Shop is hosting her third annual fashion event, Hullabaloo, at the Cleveland Masonic and Performing Arts Center.  The event will take place this Saturday, November 15th at 8:30pm.  The collection titled “Liberation” was inspired by the designer’s work with charity organizations throughout India, Africa, and Central America.

“I wanted to create the collection to express the vibrancy and brilliance of these children and the cultures that they live in.  Through color, texture, silhouette, and form I wanted to express each country's unique characteristics and originality.”  Said Valerie.

Here are some of my favorite pieces I am looking forward to seeing on the runway....

this dress....amazing....

For the past four years Valerie has been an active supporter and volunteer for the H.A.L.O. Foundation, an organization that “empowers youth in the greatest need to become contributing members of their communities”.  She has visited H.A.L.O. orphanages in Uganda and Gulu, and done work in Jaipur, Mumbai, and her family’s native country of Guatemala.  These experiences lent the inspiration for Valerie’s designs, and as always five percent of all proceeds will go directly back to the children.  In addition, one hundred percent of this year’s bar proceeds will benefit the PMP cancer research foundation.

You may remember Valerie from Project Runway - season 8, as she won national recognition from this!! Yellowcake Shop has been a cherished addition to the Gordon Square district since opening in November 2011.  Yellowcake takes pride in locally crafting fine garments, fashion with a conscience, and being an active force in the Cleveland community.

Event doors open to the public at 7pm and the show will begin promptly at 8:30.  Each unique piece featured on the runway is to be sold in a post-show auction.  Additional apparel, shoes, accessories and furniture designed specifically for the occasion will also be merchandised.   Guests are invited to stay for music and dancing with DJ Alex Hitchens until the night concludes at 1am.

Per Yellowcake: “ We believe in creating boldly fashioned clothing that sustains and supports a healthy humanity. Employing local, supporting our neighbors and aiming to do well by doing good.”

Tickets are selling quickly and can be purchased at http://www.doyoubaloo.com/tickets.html via phone: [216] 236-4073 or in store at 6500 Detroit Ave. and range in price from $20-120 based on seating preference.

Fashion for a cause is my kind of fashion! Valerie Mayen is such creative + talented designer , I am so excited to see this show.

See you all there!! xoxo

simply // not // basic

as we head toward the ever-so-dreadful winter, while enjoying this mild fall here in the CLE, I wanted to share some of my favorite pieces. most of these are pretty simple, and if you read my article from the Plain Dealer, you'll understand why! this season, basic tees + destroyed denim + soft pants + booties + menswear jackets are things that will be in constant rotation for me.

my first favorite seems to be a bit too oversized, but if you know my style, you know that I am infatuated with anything that fits like a paper bag.

ALWAYS in search of the perfect white tee... this comes pretty close

destroyed boyfriend denim? um, yes.

this jacket...

and to complete the outfit, these boots......
girl, bye. uh-mazing.
what's your favorite??

thanks for reading! xo

tuesday // shoesday & welcome // back

wow...
it's been a REALLY long time....

what better day to come back to the blogging world than TUESDAY SHOESDAY!

i'm a woman (obviously), so naturally this is one of my favorite 'made up' days of the week. i love seeing all of the different instagram posts from all of my favorite people i follow. instagram has become such a creative outlet these days, it's actually a pretty amazing.

since it's tuesday shoesday, does this mean we can treat ourselves to a new pair of shoes today?? (insert smiley face emoji here)

what are some of your favorites this fall? something tells me suede, ankle boots are going to be huge again this year... along with the chunky clog-like heel. but maybe i am biased with those styles because of Free People. and also the simple fact that i am clumsy and i get along very well with thicker heels....

here are my new obsessions.. enjoy!

currently craving

Holy amazing. I need these hot pants/hot shorts/whatever-you-call-them in my life. Pair with tights, a cropped over-sized sweater and booties..... Ta-Da, fall outfit. Check these out from H&M.

So crazy about this large Lanvin statement necklace. These huge gems were all over the Lanvin RTW show. My personal fave: the one that reads 'Help'.

Every woman needs a floppy felt fedora this fall (say that 3 times fast). These work wonders on bad hair days! Check out some of my favorites here.

Smitten. These Minimal Lace Up heels by Jeffery Campbell must have a home in my closet. ASAP. Need/Want/Splurge.

This Ruffle Trim Knit Trench from Free People literally makes me swoon. Boys can barely make me swoon, but this jacket..... gets me every single time I look at it.

Oxblood lips. Coming in hot again this fall. I love it and I will own it again this year. You should too!

What are you currently craving??

Thanks for reading! XO

fall trends 2013

So incredibly excited to be writing again!!! I've taken a month long hiatus due to lots of exciting things happening in the life of Jessica Lee....

First off, I am pleased to announce an amazing career change. I have decided to join a wonderful & growing company - Free People (part of Urban Outfitters). Hands down, best career decision I have ever made and the discount isn't too bad either..... Hello new wardrobe. When one door closes, another opens, and this door is HUGE!!!!

Now, let's chat about fall fashion 2013.

The September issue is known as one of the most important issues for all fashion publications. Not only does it pave the way for what's going to be FABULOUS for the upcoming year, but it also allows us magazine hoarders to add to our collection and drool over items we can't even imagine being in our closet.... Hello Chloe` Baylee tote and Celine Chunky Rib Sweater.

While reading through my $50 worth of September issues (I know, it's ridiculous), I compiled a list of what I believe will be fabulous this fall.

#1.) PLAID PRINTS: grunge, Nirvana, and flashbacks to Beverly Hills 90210 style.
Emerson nailed it with this dress.
Loving this plaid Suno coat paired with an embellished bottom.

#2.) FUR : faux, of course.
Boderline DYING over this Jason Wu dress.
Marc Jacobs. You can never go wrong when you mix hot pants with fur.

#3.) TAPERED TROUSERS : made for comfort and style. Pair with an oversized sweater and booties... Perfection for fall.

#4.) CULTURED PRINTS : an elevated form of Brocade stemming from the 'Brocade Craze' in Fall 2012, these prints/textures are beautiful and aesthetically stimulating.

#5.) FRINGE : need I say more? Channel your inner hippie with this 'I always want to run my fingers through it' texture.
I need this in my life. Thank you, Blumarine for designing this.
Bottega Veneta. Stunning.

#6.) ANIMAL PRINT : as much as I do not want to embrace this, because it reminds me way too much of my younger years. There are some pretty great pieces this season in the 'Cheetah Print'.
Emilio Pucci. These boots. These shorts. Uh-mazing.

What's your favorite trend this fall??

Thanks for reading!!!

made in the 216

How adorable is this artwork?!

I am so incredibly excited for this event (I typically say that about all Cleveland events), but this one is a bit more special than the others.....It is my dearest friend Jennie Doran's first MADE IN THE 216 event as OWNER of Room Service!! Such an exhilarating time for her and I cannot wait to see how amazing this event is going to be!

Now onto the details:
On Friday, August 2, Cleveland’s original artisan pop-up shopping event returns to Ohio City for a sixth year, with a jam-packed weekend of local shopping, music, and food, showcasing the city’s prolific creative community. Thousands are expected to descend on the event space—a previously vacant storefront in the market district at West 25th St and Jay—throughout the weekend, to shop from a carefully selected spectrum of locally designed and produced goods from clothing, to home ware, to artwork, curated by artisan boutique, Room Service Cleveland.

The event will feature live shows from local bands in the store itself, as well as down the block at Joy Machines and the Old Angle. Musical line-up includes: Very Knees, Sweet Gravy James, Molly Lape, Cheap Clone, Shit Box Jimmy, Extra Medium Pony, Blisse, Sammy Slims, Noon, Uno Lady, Beach Stav, Kid Tested, and Next New Nothings.

Cleveland’s food scene will also be celebrated, with local brew from Great Lakes Brewing Co, and eats provided by Touch, Umami Moto and Clark Pope Catering.

Good food, good jams, handmade treasures, and all of the CLE creatives.... Who wouldn't want to attend?!

See you there!

XO
